Carrie Soto is Back

Six years after retirement Carrie Soto and her father, Javier are in the heart of the massive screaming crowd at the 1994 US Open finals in Flushing Meadows, NY. She is mesmerized by Nicki Chan, leading the way in women’s tennis as Carrie herself once did when she held the title of number one player in the world. At 37 Carrie has multiple world records, titles and quite a lot of wagging tongues as she was nicknamed The Battle-Axe back in her heyday. At this moment Nicki Chan is one win away from overtaking the most Grand Slam wins ever. By a stroke of fate or luck, Nicki doesn’t win that match and Carrie decides to come out of retirement with her father coaching to take one more victory. This incredible journey through the cut throat all-consuming world of tennis, beautiful relationship between father and daughter and most surprising friendship with top seeded men’s player Bowe Huntley who helps Carrie get back in the game and weasels his way into her hardened heart. I was completely swept away by this peek into women’s tennis which I know very little about. The pages turned themselves as I desperately needed to know what happens next. Great characters, a lot of passion and yes, surprise, Carrie Soto is the tennis player that had an affair with Nina Riva’s husband in Malibu Rising (clever clever!) Could not put down this fast paced story of a woman attempting to hang onto who she “was” while accepting life has changed. Absolute five star summer stunner!  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Imagining this is just a fling she decides to let loose of the first time in her life. How to Fake it in Hollywood

Behind the scenes, it’s been almost a year since Grey Brooks has had actual job. When her long running teen drama series came to an end so did the offers. Having been an actress since she was eight years old, at 27 Grey considers herself lucky. She was able to help her mother pay the bills when her dead beat dad disappeared and has been independent ever since. Smart, pretty and possibly a little lonely, Grey has stayed out of the gossip mags and done the hard work. While she eyes a new role that could put her back on the map her feisty publicist feels the directors need a little nudge. She proposes Grey create a fake relationship with an absolute A-lister that has been reclusive for over 5 years and requires a creative come back as well. A decade older, Ethan Atkins was Grey’s teen heartthrob. A poster of this gorgeous hunk hung on her wall fulfilling all her young fantasies. She agrees with the crazy plan. Little did she know sparks would mutually fly, their chemistry off the rom-com charts. When the paparazzi become uncontrollable Grey and Ethan must put down their scripts face actual feelings Hollywood style. The grass is not always greener but it’s a wild ride to read about. Beach reading at it’s best! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of the Girls

Lexi is getting married to the perfect guy. He is successful, handsome though just a tad bit too controlling. After a decade of dancing professionally and partying hard Lexi is ready to settle down. Her closest friends and future sister-in-law are throwing her a hen party (bachelorette to Americans!) They have arranged an idyllic weekend in the Greek Islands. As soon as the women arrive things start to go wrong. With emotions running high it is clear each of the women are hiding something and one of them won’t make it back to London. I desperately wanted to like this latest book by Lucy Clarke, having loved all her others but this one didn’t fly for me. Didn’t like a single character and the story felt like a retelling of something I’ve already read. ⭐️⭐️

When absolutely nothing works out as planned the family is transported to a FEMA megashelter in Oklahoma with thousands of evacuees, now called IDP’s - Internally Displaced Persons. The Woman in the Library

This book in a book, where you are never quite sure where the story begins and reality ends is absolutely unputdownable. One day four strangers are sitting at a table in the Boston Public Library. They hear a piercing scream. The library is cordoned off and then closed. A murder has occurred and these four unlikely characters quickly form a deep friendship. Handsome Man is a published author working on his next novel, Heroic Chin is trying to fail Harvard Law School to piss off his socialite parents, Freud girl - a tattoo covered beauty getting her graduate degree in psychology. Lastly, there is Freddie, an Australian writer on scholarship who deems this scene as chapter one of her latest mystery, a work in progress. As the strangers learn about each other, more dead bodies are discovered and fingers are pointed. The police investigate and alibi’s become crucial. The story unfolds with a string of letters interspersed between a famous author named Hannah and Freddie’s neighbor Leo (friend or psychopath?) In an unexpected twist the reader finds themselves in a fictional funhouse. Writers, books and murder mystery all rolled into one, this wholly original tale is a must read for summer. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Where the Crawdads Sing

In 1969 Chase Andrews, handsome town charmer, football quarterback is found dead at the bottom of the fire tower. This small southern marsh town is overwhelmed with grief and rampant with suspicion. Appalled that Chase had a past relationship with Kya Clark, they immediately point their nasty fingers at this beautiful young woman who lives alone out in the marsh. Taunted by the other children, she only attended school for one day. After being abandoned by her family, Kya raised herself alone in the woods and a little boy named Tate taught her to read. Kya spent her days intensely studying nature and the world around. Much to the towns surprise reclusive Kya became a published author and expert naturalist. With few people in her life to vouch for her whereabouts, Kya has always been an easy target for their malice. Told between the past and the present the reader dives deep into the marsh and the surroundings that Kya struggles to understand. Viewing life in the simplest form she is both brilliant and honest, lonely but terrified of letting anyone into her world. With the movie releasing any day now, I had to read this 2018 bestseller first! I loved every minute of it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ben and June meet on New Year’s Eve in the Emergency Room of a New York hospital. Ben had broken his hand punching a man in a bizarre attempt to help a stranger that didn’t want his assistance. June had an awful flu. Their chemistry was intense and it didn’t take long for Ben to ask June on a date. Slowly easing into a thoughtful romance, June was an aspiring dancer and Ben a law school student on the cusp of a promising career. His unwavering support emotionally and financially was generous and loving. Years later after an unexpected pregnancy they are in the suburbs “living the dream.” Only June’s dream was left behind with the dance company. As much as she loves baby Mikey his incessant crying and discontent throbs through her heart and soul every single day. Ben works nonstop and June is home with her infant son, little sleep and hallucinations of her dead mother. Their yuppy little enclave is filled with immaculate homes and perfect moms. Ben is too busy to notice June’s downward spiral until it is too late. Narrated from both Ben and June’s perspective, this novel carefully depicts a young couple’s struggle with unfulfilled dreams, expectations and a very real disorder. Vivien is a beautiful, talented writer whose wealthy fiancé went missing along with her future plans. Evie, one of the first females to graduate Cambridge is a shy brilliant young woman who discovers first love and a literary mystery that can change their lives. As they live and work amongst the men of the shop the women realize they want more than fetching tea and standing at the register. These women want to rock the literary establishment by changing the way books are sold. This small, witty cast of characters revolve their lives around books, publishing and the literary salons of the time. As they meet and befriend some famous figures the women gather the confidence they need to carry on. Not exactly historical fiction but felt like it. This novel has quite a lot of characters and is literally all about books. I loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nora Goes Off Script

Nora is a single mom living in the small town of Laurel Ridge struggling to pay the mortgage and keep their eclectic home from crumbling. She exists paycheck to paycheck writing screenplays for The Romance Channel while her no-good husband Ben takes off in search of his real happiness. Nora realizes she is better off without him but that doesn’t mean the hurt isn’t real. So what does a good writer do? She pours her heart into something little different. Nora works in a little cabin in their yard called The Tea House and writes a movie called The Tea House. Not the Hallmark happy ending her agent is used to but its a powerful story loosely based on her own heartbreak. Quickly purchased and filmed with the sexiest man alive as the main character, Nora is thrown for a loop when they do a bit of filming in her yard and she and Leo Vance (absolutely sexiest man she has ever seen) fall into their own surprising romance right out of the movies. Her 8 and 10 year old instantly warm to Leo’s charms and it is only when he is called away for another film that Nora begins to panic. When plans don’t go as expected Nora wonders if she actually imagined the whole thing. A script within a script, Nora once again pours her story to the page but even she is struggling to find the right ending. This evenly paced, witty five star summer fun is pure joy and days later I find myself still smiling. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Every Summer After

When Persephone Fraser’s parents buy a cottage in Barry’s Bay, Ontario Canada - she is a scrawny, insecure typical 13 year old girl. Next door to this quaint new summer home are the Florek’s - two noisy boys and their sweet mom, Sue. While Sue runs the small town tavern, Charlie (15) and Sam (13), tend to run wild and quickly take Percy under their brotherly wings. Jumping off rocky cliffs, swimming across the lake and getting into all sorts of mischief becomes the norm and Percy’s summers become what dreams are made of. Secretly in love with Sam from the day they met the two become best friends, often reading each others minds along with Percy’s horror stories and blushing at Charlie’s unending stream of girlfriends. Every summer the balance tips a little bit more and they grow up in every way possible. Finally seeing each other in a new light Percy and Sam explore first love. Narrated alternately with the past and present, we find Percy at 30 years old returning to Barry’s Bay after 12 long years of complete silence. The guilt she carries along with intense loneliness for the years gone-by, Percy is terrified to see Sam but knows it is time for the complicated truth to finally be revealed. Beneath the nuanced past is an exquisite peek at the often painful, exciting, confusing and memorable years of adolescence. Truly cherished this extraordinary debut novel of friendship, family and the young summers we never forget.  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mustique Island

Mustique is a private island in the nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a chain of small islands in the West Indies. It is as idyllic as it is remote. When Willy May arrives following a three year adventure on her sailboat, she has a pocketful of cash and is ready to start a new life. After her ex-husbands unexpected passing Willy May finally leaves the stuffy London enclave where she was never really accepted. This Texan beauty queen is quickly coerced to become part of a new utopian community founded by a bizarre yet prominent English gentleman. Promised to be filled with only the rich and beautiful, even Princess Margaret has a home there. It doesn’t take long for Willy May’s grown daughters to join her. The older, a Vogue model arrives troubled and secretly pregnant while the younger is trying to desperately hold together any semblance of the family they once were. After introducing the magnificence and beauty of the island along with the quirky characters, I slowly became disenchanted. Midway through began the small itch of waiting for something to happen and sadly the snow balling dysfunctional family drama was a bit too late. Easy to read this authors wonderful writing but not my favorite. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Until Joe, Cate never dreamed there was a love this great. Succumbing to the terrifying paparazzi and harsh public opinion, Cate cannot resist her full heart and Joe’s eternal optimism. Their romance is one people write books about.  Loosely (very loosely!) based on the Kennedy’s these characters were easily imaginable and beloved. This “what if” novel is beautiful all on its own - but with JFK Jr’s handsome face in mind, Meant to Be comes instantly to life and melted my heart. This imaginative, well written, captivating love story is unputdownable and the absolute PERFECT summer read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The packhorse librarians hold a special place in the heart of the majestic Kentucky mountains. Cussy Lovett, a Blue, was one of the very first women to enter these hills and spread the love of literacy to many simple folks who had few luxuries in their lives. Back breaking work in the mines and hunting in these remote hollers left the women at home often taking care of numerous children, ramshackle homes and elderly relatives with very little income. The Lioness

Katie Barstow is an A-list actress in 1964. Katie grew up on the stage with Broadway parents and entered Hollywood life to finally escape the clutches of her abusive manipulating mother. She is set to marry her brother’s best friend David, whom they grew up with, and planning a safari honeymoon only the very wealthy could consider. Katie’s companions include her brother and his pregnant wife, fellow starlet Carmen Tedesco with her privileged husband, Terrance a handsome actor she often works with and her infamous agent. They land in Africa excited to experience the Serengeti and all it offers. Gazing at herds of magnificent animals and photographing idyllic scenes seem to be right out of the movies. While these entitled guests drink gin and are waited on hand and foot they are worried about the wrong enemies. While cautious of their distance to wild animals of which they’ve been warned they are confronted by Russians with rifles. Escorted to Land Rovers and tied up in huts the Americans have no idea what these kidnappers want. Survival is the key to figuring out what is behind this brutal attack. Told from the many many many different voices of each character this story dragged. I adored the author’s beautiful descriptive writing but in the end I couldn’t figure out if there was too much backstory or not enough. The whole plot just fell flat. I have loved all of this authors books and enjoyed numerous novels of Africa, unfortunately this one was not for me. ⭐️⭐️

Kareena is beautiful, outspoken and successful but she may be ready to swipe online as she is well on her way to being considered an old maid. After a meet cute that fails miserably, Prem and Kareena decide to join forces and get what they truly want. He, the much needed investors for his community health center and Kareena is desperate for a downpayment to buy her childhood home as her father plans retirement. Even though their views on love and marriage are night and day, the young couple cannot deny their sizzling chemistry. Fighting fate is not easy when her younger sister is an actual bridezilla and Prem is running out of excuses to fend off his beating heart. Absolutely the cutest, wedding romcom filled with steamy scenes and hilarious dating mishaps. The theme of arranged marriage is common in many cultures and the aunties data spread sheets are not that different than signing up for the latest app. Highly recommend this perfect beach read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Impossible Us

This is a love story like no other. Nick, a struggling writer whose wife just left him for his best friend - sends off a scathing email to a client who owes him money. Bee receives said email and although completely out of character, she responds to this stranger to let Nick know he’s got the wrong email. What ensues is a back and forth (You’ve Got Mail) flirtation that leads to a truly meaningful friendship. Finally, finally the two decide to meet in person. But Nick never shows, Bee never appears. Angry and hurt at first, the two later begin to dive back into the hundreds of messages sent between them and red flags are everywhere. They are somehow not in the same time/universe. Desperately wanting to meet but also filled with a strong desire to somehow make everything right they go out on a limb and commit to things that seem utterly impossible. I absolutely loved this alternative world (almost time travel -ish) premise. You have to roll with it because it can be confusing but it is superbly original and filled with wonderful quirky, witty characters. Beautifully written, this romance is a lot of fun and will fill you with wonder.  ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Together these women form new bonds that teach them all a lesson about family, both the one you are born into and the one you choose. This beautiful, tender story is filled with love, friendship and hope. I was simple taken away by the stunning descriptions of the mountains and rivers of North Carolina. The more Emma tries to explain each finding, the more twisted her lies become. The truth is nowhere in sight. A mysterious love story that could make even the most mundane details appear sinister. Unique, fast paced thriller kept me guessing until the very end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Christie Affair

On December 3, 1926 famed mystery writer Agatha Christie is told by her husband Archie that he is in love with another woman. The couple quarrels after he makes this devastating announcement and leaves to spend the weekend with his mistress, not his wife. Later that evening Agatha, devastated by the news, packs a few things and leaves their estate in her precious sports car. She is not seen or heard from again for 11 days. During this time Archie appears shocked while the household staff points fingers at him. His girlfriend quietly leaves town. The police are called as the entire country begins a massive search for the famed author, mother and wife. Was this news story fodder for her latest book release? A public relations scandal to hold onto a crumbling marriage? The Christie Affair is cleverly narrated by Nan O’Dea, Archie’s mistress. Nan has her own agenda and personal history that has been well hidden. When Nan’s backstory crosses paths with the present search party she can no longer deny her unexpected role in the Christie’s life. This fictionalized account of what could have been, might have been - of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time is positively mesmerizing. A novel not unlike one of Agatha’s own creations. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Very quickly, most likely too quickly, Ciara moves into Oliver’s apartment so they can work remotely and continue to get to know each other. To avoid confrontation Ciara doesn’t tell her sister or friends. Oliver appears quite content in their little bubble. He is more at ease than she has seen him since their initial meeting. Their romance blossoms but small clues Ciara can no longer ignore present themselves daily and she begins to snoop. Weeks later when a neighbor complains of a horrifying smell emanating down the hall the detectives arrive. A decomposing body is discovered in the bathroom. The apartment is wiped clean.
